A1 Beginner
English at A1 (Beginner)
At A1, a learner is taking their first steps in the language. They understand and use simple everyday phrases: they can say hello, give their name, country and age, and talk about their family and where they live. They can ask someone the same questions and understand a short answer, especially if the other person speaks slowly and is happy to repeat. In writing, they can manage a short note or a postcard and fill in a simple form. They can read signs, menus, timetables and other short texts with familiar words.
Our A1 vocabulary is built around what surrounds a person every day: family, food, parts of the body, rooms and furniture, the weather, the town and school. Grammar starts with to be and have got, articles, plurals and the present simple. If you are just starting English, or coming back to it after a long break, begin with this level: everything else rests on it.
